Ah, politics
Feb. 3rd, 2005 12:41 amSo, sometimes I forget how nasty the Right can be. I saw Greg Hecht tonight, a Dem candidate for Lt. Governor here in 2006. Never much cared for him - always seemed to be a party flunky. Did some quick research on him, and read the official right-wing attack on him. From http://www.gopusa.com/georgia/
"On the Democrat side, the only candidate we know about is former state senator Greg Hecht. A person, you might be interested to know, who was born Jewish and lived most of his life as a Jew, but converted to his wife's Christianity solely because that was the only way he felt he could get elected in the Jonesboro area of south Atlanta."
This is an attempt to cloak the true role of the attack. The writer designed it so he could say, "All I'm arguing is that Hecht is a political opportunist," when in fact it's main role is to remind bigots that Hecht was Jewish - reason right there to vote agin 'im!
Still probably won't vote for Hecht, but he looks a lot better in light of the right-wing attack, as well as the fact that Ralph Reed will probably be his opponent.
EDIT: I have removed references to Republican and replaced it with the far more accurate right and right-wing. I have also added the full quote, as well as my feelings regarding its attempts to cloak its true role. Never expected this many comments on this post, but definitely enjoyed them :-)
