So, next Sunday is Mother's Day), and I'm getting set to make one of my annual Mother's Day gifts - a donation to Planned Parenthood. Even though I have no immediate plans to become a mother, I feel that there are few gifts you can give a mother more important than the ability to control her own maternal destiny. Even if she gets blindsided by the darned stork and decides to keep the little rugrat anyway, the ability to make that choice is a critical one for her life and wellbeing.

Gonna add a new gift this year. Rosa L. DeLauro, a congresswoman from Connecticut, has been pushing for a number of years for the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act, a bill to get insurance companies to cover 48-hour hospitalization for masectomy patients if their doctors deem it necessary (http://www.house.gov/delauro/press/2008/January/Breast_Cancer_1_23_08.html). Since, in a bizarre coincidence (note irony), motherhood and masectomies often strike the same people, working to get such protection in place seems an excellent Mother's Day gift. While DeLauro has been pushing this without success for a number of years, this election year she has lined up a good set of supporters. Thus, this year's new Mother's Day gift is a call of support to her office as well as a push to my own congressperson's office to make sure that supporting it goes on his agenda. If you need to find out your congressperson's contact info, you can go here:

And on Sunday, don't forget to send games. Mothers really like games. Especially science fantasy RPGs ...
