Week of 1-07-03
Jan. 7th, 2003 06:56 pmWeds 1/08. Qabalah studies at my place at 8 pm. Might go to Armory afterward. Is that still happening?
Thurs 1/09. Game Night. Trying out some new stuff
Fri 1/10. Not sure. Anyone up to anything cool? Might go to this during the day:
With all of the encroachments of civil rights that are occurring, some communities have begun local Rights Defense Committees as a response. You may have read the recent New York Times article that described how such efforts have been successful in 20 communities in securing the adoption of resolutions in defense of the Bill of Rights in their councils.
A few of us have been talking about the possibility of initiating such a program here in the Atlanta area. To this end we are convening a short, exploratory meeting on FRIDAY, JANUARY 10TH at 1:00PM at the Corner Bakery, Peachtree and 14th Street.
The purpose of a local group would be
1) To provide information and education about the threats to the Bill of Rights and our fundamental constitutional rights because of provisions in the Patriot Act, the Homeland Security act and various administrative actions of the Bush and Ashcroft people. This might be through community meetings, petition drives, teach-ins, etc.
2) To attempt to have resolutions passed in local councils that call for police and other authorities not to cooperate with unconstitutional requests from federal bodies. The discussion and negotiations related to such resolutions has brought the issue to the attention of the media in many places.
